Research projects

Over the years, I have developed and have been involved in a number research projects in the field of (digital) humanities and cultural heritage. Here is a short and not yet complete overview divided in larger and smaller research projects:

Large research projects:

 

  1. Learning From Past Weather / Weer leren van het verleden (2025-ongoing), see also: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ulpWC5ftsYA

    In this collaborative project, carried out by the Huygens Institute, the University of Twente, the KNMI and the National Archives, historical weather data from logbooks of Dutch naval vessels are extracted for new (historical) climate research. In order achieve our aim we use citizen science and AI methods.

    My roles: principal investigator and project lead (together with Prof. Jelle van Lottum), co-author of proposal
     

  2. NWO/NWA-OCR (2024-2031): HAICu (digital Humanities - Artificial Intelligence - Cultural Heritage), see also: https://www.haicu.science, total project volume: ca. 10 mil. euros.

    My roles: co-principal investigator, member of daily board & research committee, lead of WP 2: Continual Machine Learning and Humans in the Loop.
     

  3. NWO-Creatieve Industries, Brill publishers (2016-2020): Making Sense of Illustrated Handwritten Archives, see also project website, total project volume: ca. 700k euros.

    My roles: member steering committee, co-author of proposal, researcher, lead organizer of final conference.
     

Smaller research projects (selection): ​

  1. NWO/ECCM MVI, Top-up (2022-2025): Socio-technical pathways and material choices for a responsible electrification of the production of chemicals and fuels, total project volume: ca. 380k.

    My role: co-principal investigator
     

  2. NWO-Creative Industries/KIEM (2017-2019): Eventscapes: Providing Spatio-Temporal Access to the Prize Papers, total project volume, ca. 50k euros.

    My roles: co-PI, researcher
     

  3. Science Heritage Foundation, Philadelphia, (2015-2016): ​​John C. Haas postdoc fellowship for research, total project volume ca. 45k dollar.
